Jump, Swing, and Sing: Helping Your Child Through Sensory Challenges

We're diving into the world of sensory regulation for children. Some kids naturally excel at it, while others need a bit of guidance. Sensory regulation is crucial because it creates an ideal learning environment. After all, it's hard to concentrate when your sensory system is out of sync—just like how you struggle to focus on an empty stomach!

Signs Your Child Might Need Help with Sensory Regulation

Is your child:

  • Struggling to pay attention?

  • Exhibiting challenging behaviors?

  • Crying, jumping, screaming, or hitting?

  • Leaning on everything (including you)?

  • Chewing on non-food items?

These are just a few indicators that your child might need help with sensory regulation.

Simple and Effective Ways to Help Your Child

  1. Chewy Toys and Foods

  1. Big Hugs

  • Hugs are not only comforting but also free! Tight hugs can work wonders for sensory regulation (theirs and yours).

  1. Lotion Massage

  • When your child is struggling, try a soothing lotion massage. Rub it on their legs, feet, arms, and hands to help them feel good in their body again.

  1. Swinging

  • Swings are a favorite at our house, both indoors and outdoors. They provide great sensory input. Check out some of our favorite swings!

  • Swing Pod, Cuddle Swing

  1. Jumping

  • Jumping is a fantastic and easy way to help your child regulate. Our family loves jumping parties in the living room. If you prefer, invest in a mini trampoline or a bounce house for endless fun.

  1. Water Tables for Sensory Play

  • Whether filled with water, cooked spaghetti, mud, or sand, water tables are excellent for sensory activities. They are a wonderful way to help your child regulate.

  1. Music

  • Music is a top sensory regulation tool in our home. Our daughter uses singing and music to self-regulate, whether at home or out and about. We love our little MP3 player with a speaker that doesn't require headphones!
